It will be five years after the first Joker movie’s premiere when Joker 2 hits theaters during the 2024 Oscar season. October 4, 2024 is when Joker 2 is supposed to be released. Since Phoenix leads the Joker, the sequel would undoubtedly fail without him. In addition to Phoenix reprising his role as the Clown Prince of Crime, Deadline reports that Zazie Beetz, who played Sophie Drummond in the original movie, will also be returning.
Though it was later revealed that their romance was solely in Arthur’s imagination and that Sophie was only his neighbor in real life, Sophie was first shown as having some romantic interest in him. Uncertainty surrounded Sophie’s escape from Joker, but a cut clip reveals that she did, suggesting that her appearances in the sequel will be more than just memories.
Phoenix and Beetz are joined by a new and interesting group of supporting players. In the movie, Lady Gaga will play Harley Quinn, the Joker’s love interest in Arkham Asylum. Uncertainty surrounds how closely the sequel will follow the original tale, Lady Gaga plays a big role in it.
The other well-known actor joining the group is Brendan Gleeson (In Bruges, The Banshees of Inisherin), however it is unclear what part he will play. A large number of other actors have also been cast in roles that are still unknown.

It’s unclear if Joker: Folie à Deux occurs minutes or years after Joker’s last scene, in which Arthur kills the Arkham Asylum staffer. Certain narrative lines in Joker: Folie à Deux make it clear that Arthur was not able to escape, given that the previous film ends with him running from Arkham Asylum guards after killing a doctor.
Likewise, he doesn’t seem to have aged in the preview or trailer, indicating that the film most likely doesn’t jump in time. Either way, it’s been stated that a significant amount of the sequel occurs in Arkham, and the Joker 2 teaser supports this.
The most attention has been paid to Joker: Folie à Deux’s sudden tone shift, especially considering that the Joker sequel will be a musical. It makes especially sense that Lady Gaga was cast as Harley Quinn given that she is not just a fantastic performer but has also grown into a superb actor.

Guðnadóttir earned an Oscar for her unique and hauntingly beautiful stripped-back soundtrack for the 2019 film. She will return to compose for Joker 2. However, she will surely take a very different tack for the follow-up.
Joker: Folie à Deux will be a musical, at least in part, therefore Guðnadóttir will also need to write music with lyrics. But since she’s written the music for other dramatic and scary films like Tár, The Revenant, and Sicario, it’s unlikely that the sequel will deviate too much from her powerful cello work.
