Joker: Folie à Deux– Official Teaser: For Warner Bros, the release of the “Joker: Folie à Deux” trailer was no laughing matter. With 167 million views in its first day, the promotion for the studio’s upcoming DC sequel, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, is off to a great start. Immediately following its premiere at Warner Bros.’ CinemaCon event in Las Vegas, the teaser trailer was made available online.
Variety has been informed by sources that the trailer numbers and social interaction for the “Joker” sequel exceeded those of the first “Barbie” teaser, making it Warner Bros.’ most successful launch in recent memory. Without a doubt, Lady Gaga’s enormous social media following of 150 million followers helped the release.
On the night of its debut, the trailer quickly rose to the top of the YouTube trending list. It has now received 15.6 million views and counting, and over two days after its release, it is still ranked #4.
Over the course of its first 24 hours, the “Joker” sequel trailer also took over X, trending 10 terms associated with the film: #JokerFolieADeux, Gaga, Harley, Harley Quinn, Joaquin Phoenix, Joker, Joker 2, Joker2, Lady Gaga, and Todd Phillips.
About Joker: Folie à Deux
The story of the Clown Prince of Crime’s beginnings was told in the stand-alone movie Joker, which was so successful that a follow-up called Joker: Folie à Deux was made. In the 2019 movie, Joaquin Phoenix plays hired clown Arthur Fleck, who wants to become a well-known stand-up comedian. Arthur sets off on a violent journey that, by the time the Joker movie concludes, has transformed him into the Clown Prince of Crime and sparked a movement due to his continued bullying and unfair treatment within Gotham’s economic system.
Joker was a controversial movie that won a lot of awards despite being divisive because of its provocative look at mental health. Phoenix won the Best Actor Oscar, and Hildur Guðnadóttir won the Best Original Score Oscar. This is in addition to the film’s $1 billion global box office haul (according to Box Office Mojo) on a mere $55 million budget. It appears Warner Bros. may easily duplicate that success given the star-studded ensemble of Joker: Folie à Deux and some other interesting details that have been revealed about the film along the road.
Following the release of a teaser the week before, a trailer for The Joker 2 was released on April 9, 2024. Though a few comically ambiguous story details remain, the teaser offered additional information about the film’s appearance and the first actual look at Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker and Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn together.
Joker: Folie à Deux Trailer
The Joker: Folie à Deux’s trailer suggests that a big portion of the sequel, which picks up where the last one left off, will take place in Arkham. In the trailer, Arthur Fleck meets Gaga’s Harley Quinn while he’s incarcerated. Quinn is a patient in the hospital instead of the Joker’s therapist, as is common in their biography, which significantly alters this part of their comic origin story.
However, given that the scene in which Fleck is being pursued by two more men costumed like the Joker takes place in Gotham City, it also appears from the trailer that the two are able to escape. Having said that, it also appears that the musical sections of the film will show a break from reality, meaning that anything might actually happen in Joker 2’s main story.

Joker: Folie à Deux Release Date
It will be five years after the first Joker movie’s premiere when Joker 2 hits theaters during the 2024 Oscar season. October 4, 2024 is when Joker 2 is supposed to be released. Considering how well-received the original movie was, Warner Bros.’ decision to release the sequel on that day was not surprising. The release date suggests that the studio is confident in the sequel and believes it will be a big victor in the 2024–2025 Oscar ceremonies, which will help the quality of the film.
Writer/director Todd Phillips completed the script in 2022, and the movie’s development and production were accelerated. Joker: Folie à Deux is purportedly more than twice as costly as Joker, with production expenses estimated to be a stunning $150 million.

- Lady Gaga-Harleen Quinzel/harley Quinn

Since Phoenix leads the Joker, the sequel would undoubtedly fail without him. In addition to Phoenix reprising his role as the Clown Prince of Crime, Deadline reports that Zazie Beetz, who played Sophie Drummond in the original movie, will also be returning.
Though it was later revealed that their romance was solely in Arthur’s imagination and that Sophie was only his neighbor in real life, Sophie was first shown as having some romantic interest in him. Uncertainty surrounded Sophie’s escape from Joker, but a cut clip reveals that she did, suggesting that her appearances in the sequel will be more than just memories.
Phoenix and Beetz are joined by a new and interesting group of supporting players. In the movie, Lady Gaga will play Harley Quinn, the Joker’s love interest in Arkham Asylum. Uncertainty surrounds how closely the sequel will follow the original tale, Lady Gaga plays a big role in it.
The other well-known actor joining the group is Brendan Gleeson (In Bruges, The Banshees of Inisherin), however it is unclear what part he will play. A large number of other actors have also been cast in roles that are still unknown.
Joker: Folie à Deux Plot Details
It’s unclear if Joker: Folie à Deux occurs minutes or years after Joker’s last scene, in which Arthur kills the Arkham Asylum staffer. Certain narrative lines in Joker: Folie à Deux make it clear that Arthur was not able to escape, given that the previous film ends with him running from Arkham Asylum guards after killing a doctor.
Likewise, he doesn’t seem to have aged in the preview or trailer, indicating that the film most likely doesn’t jump in time. Either way, it’s been stated that a significant amount of the sequel occurs in Arkham, and the Joker 2 teaser supports this.
The most attention has been paid to Joker: Folie à Deux’s sudden tone shift, especially considering that the Joker sequel will be a musical. It makes especially sense that Lady Gaga was cast as Harley Quinn given that she is not just a fantastic performer but has also grown into a superb actor.
In the end, Phillips’ ability to pull off the musical component—always a risky decision—relies on Gaga. The musical components will probably exist in Arthur’s thoughts, just as his relationship with Sophie did in the first film since most of the film will take place in Arkham.
Considering that the subtitle of the film translates to “madness for two,” which is a form of shared delusional condition, that may be especially the case.
Even if Joker 2’s use of music is debatable, it may be a creative and inventive way to achieve the desired effect while providing a welcome diversion from the gloomy and somber tone of the previous movie. Moreover, the Joker has always been mostly theatrical and melodic, thus this dramatic shift is somewhat consistent with the mythical character. The Arkham locale offers a plethora of alternatives and possibilities as well, as it might add more villains to Batman’s list of rogues.
Joker: Folie à Deux Other Details
Guðnadóttir earned an Oscar for her unique and hauntingly beautiful stripped-back soundtrack for the 2019 film. She will return to compose for Joker 2. However, she will surely take a very different tack for the follow-up.
Joker: Folie à Deux will be a musical, at least in part, therefore Guðnadóttir will also need to write music with lyrics. But since she’s written the music for other dramatic and scary films like Tár, The Revenant, and Sicario, it’s unlikely that the sequel will deviate too much from her powerful cello work.
